John W. Bruce The parents of John Bruce were both born in Australia, his mother being of Russian extraction and his father's parents being of Scotch descent. Two of his sisters were born in Australia, one in South Africa and John, the only son, was born in Toronto and was educated there. After graduating high school he entered Art School. While in his final year at Art School, he commenced doing free lance illustration for the Toronto Star Weekly. After graduation he continued to do work as a free lance illustrator doing work for the Canadian Home Journal and a variety of other local magazines. While at Art School, he had the good fortune to become friends with John Clymer, a well-known western historical artist, who was working as an illustrator in Toronto. Also through his work at the Toronto Star, he became friends with Bob Loughteed, another well-known painter - now deceased, who worked at the Star at that time. One other well-known person of interest working for the Toronto Star at the same time was the writer, Ernest Hemingway, who had made his way through Toronto and had worked there for some time. While working for the Star, John would go down to pick up his assignment early in the morning in time to observe a morning ritual, started by Mr. Hemingway, in which the five to six staff writers would all take up their steel trash baskets, turn them upside down in a circle and proceed to discuss, argue, and deliberate to loud voices while smoking cigars or cigarettes and drinking coffee. It was a hilarious sight to which he felt privileged to have been a spectator. It was some years after his mother's death that John discovered that his mother had studied art in Australia and after some digging around in the family attic, he was able to fine two of her paintings. He cherishes them very much and to this day, these paintings are on display in his studio. |
Prior to World War II, John returned to school and studied engineering. He worked as a design engineer until his move to the United States in 1949. During this period he continued to paint whenever possible and along with two friends, who were also painters, helped in founding the Willowdale Group of Artists which has grown from its original seven dedicated painters to one of the most active art groups in Canada for the professional and amateur alike. When he moved from Canada to the United States, he settled in Connecticut and was employed by Henry Dreyfuss - the well-known industrial designer in New York City. Because of his background in art and engineering, he soon became office manager and supervised the work of sixteen designers. In 1952 he became a member of the Industrial Design Society of America and is currently a life member. In 1956 he left the Henry Dreyfuss office and opened his own consulting office. During the course of his consulting business career, his list of clients included such names as TWA, Continental Can Co., Mobil, IBM, Perkins Elmer, Barnes Engineering Company, etc... In 1968 John was retained as a consultant by a firm in Danbury entitled "Graphic Sciences, Inc." and assisted the firm in designing the first fax machine ever. The project was a huge success. He smiles when he thinks about having helped with a design that has now become indispensable to the business world today. In the late 1960's, John began to travel and paint in the gulf islands. Barbados was a favorite spot, followed by St. Lucia, St. Vincent, Carriacou and Grenada. In 1980 his close friends/neighbors invited him to spend the Christmas Holiday with them in Eleuthera, one of the outer islands in the Bahamas, near Nassau. He became so entranced with the area that he kept returning spending four to five months at a time working on his paintings. Unfortunately hurricane Andrew hit the island and the havoc left in the wake of this mighty hurricane devastated the island, but with time it is slowly stating to rebuild. John currently has a studio in the beautiful Tennessee mountains on the Cumberland Plateau in Crossville, Tennessee. He still travels and is constantly looking for new ideas and inspirations to place on his canvas for all to enjoy. |
